My work involves the examination of solute release with mineral weathering in mining and mining-impacted environments. These metal- and sulfur-rich environments provide a dynamic reaction arena where metal solubility and transport are continually altered because of strong chemical and physical gradients. Our understanding of the transport of metals is quickly changing with our ability to examine the nanoscale alteration of mineral surfaces and the temporal flux of their oxidative dissolution, which can produce transportable nanophase inorganic and organic metal particles.
